Ten Things About... V.L. Locey - An Author Interview

I was first introduced to V.L. Locey when I was searching out M/M sports books - specifically hockey and fell down a rabbit hole of wonderful books that she co-wrote with RJ Scott and now we all have the opportunity to learn just a little more about her!  I'm excited to learn more about the WIP...

Let's dive right into the questions:

Indie or Traditionally published? - Tell us how this works for you...
I’m now 100% Indie and am loving it! I did start out with several small houses but they all folded, many taking my rights and money with them, so I made the switch to self-pubbing and have never looked back.

Plot or Pants? Do you pre-plot your books, use an outline, fly by the seat of your pants or some combination of things? How do you keep track of characters in a series? Do you keep a journal of your characters’ statistics, such as hair and eye color, relatives, hometown, etc.
I’m a total pantser of epic proportions. I generally start out with an idea, a couple of brief character bios, and a cover. That’s it. Everything from start to finish is completely organic and most always linear.

Tell us about your first… published M/M fiction/romance…
To be honest I’d have to go way back to my Marvel fan fiction days. It was there that I began getting comments about how homoerotic my works were. From there I moved into romances, and as hockey is a huge love of mine, I leaped at the chance to pen a novella for a LGBTQ pub that was putting together a sports romance anthology. I wrote Goaltender’s Penalty for that anthology and I’ve been firmly in the gay romance camp ever since. It was like finding my heart when I discovered MM romance.

and then your most recent one…
My most recent one is a PNR romance WIP that I’m this close *pinches air between fingers* to completing. It’s called Spiritual Whispers and is releasing in 2022 for Halloween!

Do you write full time or part-time?
I write full time.

Which character still pops into your mind to visit from time to time?
This is easy. Victor Kalinski. He’s my best-selling character and he resides inside my head. I’m not sure if that’s good or not as he tends to be a bit of a jerk – to put it mildly – but he’s always there whispering to me to write him another book.

Where do you write? Do you have a routine?
I write in my office/bedroom and yep, my life is all about routine. I’m generally at the laptop by 8 am, write until I break for a workout and lunch, and then come back to the laptop to either write more or attend to edits, admin work, or whatever else pops up. Another break for dinner and I make one final sweep then log off for the evening.

What are your writing goals for the next year? The future?
I’m looking to scale back a wee bit on the number of releases in 2022. Of course, I said that about 2021 and it never happened so who knows! LOL My goals are simply to keep writing stories that I love and sharing them with my amazing readers.

What else do you want us to know about you?
Hmm, well, I’m a huge New York Rangers fan, I love cats and chickens, I adore travelling. I love to read, walk, and chill with my hubby of over 30 years. Oh, and I do enjoy a cup of coffee (or twenty) during the day.

Who’s your biggest supporter/cheerleader?
My daughter and my husband. Both are incredibly supportive of my career.

Where do you find inspiration?
I find it everywhere. I know that sounds trite but it’s true. I’ve had stories spring from people watching, the beauty of a butterfly, a song on the radio, the hush of snow on an old hunting camp. And I never know when it will strike! I visited an antique store while on a quick Vermont getaway with my daughter in October and that visit has turned into my current work-in-progress!

What do your friends and family think of what you write, do they know?
Yep, they all know. I’m quite vocal about my work as well as being a loving and supportive mother to an out and pan daughter. I’m sure some of them are uncomfortable but that’s their burden to bear, not mine. As I live in a conservative area of rural Pennsylvania I’ve run into bigots from time to time at local book events and those types never even register. It’s the young adults and teens who come to me and tell me that they are so thrilled to see LGBTQ literature in such a small red town. Those are the people and opinions that matter to me and give me courage and inspiration to keep penning my tales.

What is your favorite thing about writing M/M romance?
Oh my there are so many! I love the dynamic between two men and how they communicate and romance each other. And if all of that happens while the guys are on skates so much the better! Also, I have to say that the MM community is simply incredible! The authors, readers, and bloggers are so supportive and inclusive. It makes it a joy to be part of this wonderful world of gay romances.
