#TeaserTuesday - Desert Dreams (Owatonna 6) by RJ Scott & V.L. Locey

So excited to have an exclusive excerpt from Desert Dreams by RJ Scott .and V.L. Locey, which is available for pre-order and will release on Thursday!  I'm about 40% through the ARC and loving it!

Here's the blurb:

When danger stalks their new home, it’s only their strength as a couple that keeps them safe.

Ryker misses Jacob every day he’s away. At the start of a new Raptors season with everything to play for, Jacob, the desert ranch, and their small menagerie of animals have become an oasis of peace in a turbulent world. He’s never ridden a horse, he’s never considered how much this place would mean to him, but suddenly he’s forming a connection with a mare called Tops and loving every moment of this new life. Balancing hockey with his love for Jacob, he feels that nothing can ever go wrong.

With his life finally on track, Jacob is pouring all of himself into the dream he shares with Ryker. Putting the final touches on Mountain Vista Ranch, a halfway home for troubled LGBTQ youth and their families, fills his heart with pride. When their first clients arrive, he finds himself drawn to the small family and their plight. Little does he or Ryker know that the darkness the newcomers have fled from is following them.

Excerpt:

Gila fucking monster in my cage!

I rounded on the lizard asshole, stick raised, and then dropped it, and myself, into the dirt, right in front of a wide-eyed little girl who had frozen on the spot. She wasn’t crying. I didn’t yelp, but my heart was racing as I pulled out my earbuds and killed the music.

“Hey, Rose,” I murmured, and casually dug into my pocket for my phone, ready to send a 911 message to Jacob if I fucked this up.

She sniffed dramatically, and I’d seen this before with Lottie. The sniff indicated tears, and I hated to see kids cry, particularly if it was all my fault. This was the moment I needed a Raptors’ teddy that I could make dance—that always made Lottie smile. I kicked my stick farther away, and she stared at it, then me and sniffed again. I needed to do something, stat.

“Are you okay?”

“Where’s the puppy?” she asked.

I blinked at her. I might not have had a Raptors’ teddy, but I did have a puppy.

“Stay here,” I said and jogged to our back door, whistling for Rex, who finally appeared around the corner, carrying what looked suspiciously like one of my signed jerseys. He jumped the back step and stared up at me with an expression that spoke of someone who’d been rudely interrupted from an awesome cuddle with Jacob. “I need you,” I said to him, and I even got a wag of the tail. “This way.”

“Puppy!” Rose called and clapped her hands.

Rex was all over that in an instant, dancing around Rose, so excited to have a new playmate that he dropped the jersey, which yes, was my prize jersey signed by the Railers. I sat on the ground facing her, pulling back my hair into a ponytail, and securing it with a band. Jacob loved when my hair got long, but I genuinely needed to get it cut, if only a bit.

“This is Rex,” I announced, as the dog laid on his back in front of Rose, demanding belly rubs and wriggling like a worm. Rose shivered, and I realized for the first time how underdressed she was in just a thin tee and some PJ bottoms. I extended the Railers shirt and put it over her head, helping her arms through. It swamped her, but at least she stopped shivering.

“Hi, Rex.” She giggled, and pushed back huge sleeves to stroke and pet the pup, and I felt an enormous peace seeing her so happy.

“What the hell!” I glanced up, and her brother David was there. Right there. At the gate into the enclosure, running in and scooping Rose up into his arms. He was terrified. “Leave her alone!” he shouted at me, and I put up my hands in innocence.

“She was just petting Rex—”

“Where did you go, Rose! I thought you’d run off, it’s not safe here!”

“Puppy!” Rose began and then started crying in earnest.

“See what you did!” David snapped, and then turned his back on me and left the enclosure.

Well shit.
