Reckless (Dauntless Island Book 3) by Lisa Henry & J.A. Rock

We are back of Dauntless Island in Reckless. This is a slow burn doctor and patient romance.

From the blurb:

Welcome to Dauntless Island, where the doctor is in.

Alastair Jones comes to Dauntless looking for a sea change after the death of his husband. The quiet island seems like the perfect place to slow down and forget the rest of the world exists, after a career working in a busy Melbourne hospital. As the island's first and only doctor, he has a purpose again.

Robbie Finch has spent his whole life on Dauntless, working the family farm and keeping his head down. But every few weeks, the quiet becomes unbearable, and he takes the ferry to Newcastle to find what he needs—rough, anonymous sex with strangers who won’t remember his name in the morning. It's reckless, dangerous, and the only way he knows to quiet the noise in his head.

When Robbie is forced to visit the island’s new doctor, Alastair is intrigued, and a tentative connection forms. For Robbie, spending time with Alastair is at once a safe haven and the riskiest leap he’s ever taken. Could this be a way for Robbie to get what he needs without putting himself in physical danger? And is he willing to put his heart on the line to find out?

Reckless contains an emotionally closed-off doctor who thought he was done with love, a stubborn farmer who doesn’t know how to be gentle with himself, an arrangement that might almost be a relationship, and the mortifying ordeal of being known. Also, a horse that likes to chew hair.

Molly Otto's review:

Robbie leaves Dauntless Island once a month to seek companionship and feel like he is something more than an islander. Too bad he does it in the worse way possible, putting himself in danger with each excursion. When he seeks help from the new doctor in his latest mistake, Alastair begins the slow process of showing Robbie a healthy relationship. Alastair comes to Dauntless to start over after losing his husband whom he started growing apart from but never having the courage to truly end the relationship until it was too late. On Dauntless Island he learns what is like to slowly become accepted by the people and show he's okay ish with the barter system as payment, even if he still wants them to get a Medicare card, good luck with that. Dauntless Island continues to show a simple life of people doing what must be done to survive the best way they know how. Alastair takes some getting used to this way of life and along the way becomes intrigued by the quiet Robbie. Together they learn what is like to be loved and cherished for whom they are and not what the other wants them to be. They have a slow courtship where one day it just hits both that they were meant to be, even with some hiccups along the way.

Button John continues to show us why this walking disaster deserves to be seen and maybe one day he will find his match too. But alas, his story is not next, and oh boy I am so ready for the next installment of this ragtag group of Islanders and their Dauntless way of life.

Reckless is currently available as an e-book and paperback
