Mortis (Mayhem Manuscripts Season Two: Cryptids) by Lily James

Monsters and demons everywhere!!! I knew this series was going to be good, but gosh, these books are Phenomenal!! A must read book for October!!

From the blurb:

Some beasts never wanted to be monsters.
The most dangerous ones always did.

For sixty years, Kael has survived by hunting anyone foolish enough to enter Barrowfell Woods. Bound to his inner demon, every meal leaves him drowning in guilt. When he finally refuses to kill again, desperation drives him beyond the treeline and into the world of humans.

Teddy Adler has spent his life surrounded by the dead. As the mortuary technician at his family's funeral home, corpses don't scare him. Demons, apparently, don't either.

Instead of running from the seven-foot cryptid he catches eating one of his clients, Teddy offers Kael a solution neither of them expected. One that lets him feed on the dead instead of the living.

But while Teddy teaches a demon how to survive without murder, a centuries-old cult is preparing to finish what its founders started. Their leader has spent a lifetime searching for the beast his family once enslaved, and he'll burn down an entire town to drag Kael back into chains.

Mortis is a full-length MM dark (ish) monster romance with a hungry cryptid that loves to bite and a sassy human that's great at cooking. Expect black comedy vibes, a wholesome found family, cults and secret societies, and some "ethically sourced" flesh. Mortis is part of the Mayhem Manuscripts Cryptids shared world collaboration. Each book is a standalone containing themes and situations not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Thera's review:

I'm loving this collab. Kael and Teddy were great together. Kael was so sweet. Teddy was amazing too. He just accepted everything for what it was. Arlo was a great side character too. I look forward to his book.

Katriana Prey's review:

I never knew a flesh eating monster could be so adidable but Kael is THE CUTEST flesh eating "monster" ever! Curious about why the word monster is in parentheses? Its because Kael is an absolute sweetheart who is just trying to survive, who feels guilt for every person he has eaten, true monsters don't feel guilt. Therefore he is not a monster! He's just a cute cryptid who loves crocs.

I loved this book so much! I haven't read very many book with cannabilism before but this was done in a way where you still got that gore-y/dark vibe, while also feeling like it made sense?? I mean, of course cute Kael still had to eat, obviously sweet Teddy was going to provide for him. Makes sense.. right?!

I honestly loved every part of the book, the characters, the plot, the dialogue, the balance between dark romance, humor, horror, cuteness, and wholesome found family moments, just all combined together to make one magnificent book that I really enjoyed reading!

I was hooked from the very first page and reas this in one sitting, I couldn't put this down, i needed to read more about these characters and I needed to know their story. And what a beautiful story it ended up being!

Now, I can't write this review without acknowledging Teddy's best friend, Arlo. He is an absolutely fabulous character and I adore him! Its rare to read a book where you end up loving the side characters just as much as the main characters, but that's exactly what happened here. I am so beyond curious about him and what his story would potentially be, I feel like his story is going to be full of sass and snark, and I'm here for it!

After reading yet another fabulous book from Lily, its safe to say that I cannot wait to see what Lily writes next!!

Here are two of my favorite quotes, the first one I laughed out loud wheh i read it:

“I . . .” I flexed my claws, uncertain where to begin. “I’m not human.”

“No fucking shit, you overgrown goat. What are you?”

This second one is just really sweet and heartfelt; “You’ve spent your whole life looking after others, Teds,” he said softly. “It’s about time someone looked after you too.”
