This is the start of a series first published in 2016. A really entertaining mystery fashioned along Edgar Allen Poe similarities that and antique dealer and very interested police detective try to solve.
From the blurb:
It’s Christmas in New York City, and all antique shop owner Sebastian Snow wants is for his business to make money and to save his floundering relationship with closeted CSU detective, Neil Millett. But when Snow’s Antique Emporium is broken into and a heart is found under the floorboards, Sebastian can’t let the mystery rest.
He soon finds himself caught up in murder investigations that echo the macabre writings of Edgar Allan Poe. To make matters worse, Sebastian’s sleuthing is causing his relationship with Neil to crumble, while at the same time he’s crushing hard on the lead homicide detective of the case, Calvin Winter. Sebastian and Calvin must work together to unravel the mystery behind the killings, despite the mounting danger and sexual tension, before Sebastian becomes the next victim.
In the end, Sebastian only wants to get out of this mess alive and live happily ever after with Calvin.
SNik's review:
First in series (Snow & Winter). Mystery/suspense. Single POV.
Sebastian Snow is having a bad week, he’s fighting with his boyfriend, someone put a pig's heart under the floor of his store, and he falls over the dead body of a colleague. While the mysteries bring Detective Calvin Winter into his life, Sebastian might be in mortal danger.
The intrigue starts right away, and anyone that’s a fan of Edgar Allen Poe will enjoy the references (although macabre at times) to his works in conjunction with clues. The chemistry between Calvin and Sebastian is immediate, but I’m not really a fan of Sebastian being in a relationship while starting something up with Calvin. It is always hard with single POV to get an understanding of the other character’s motivations (Calvin falling for Sebastian just as fast as Sebastian), as they do ramp up strong feelings fairly quickly. Overall I enjoyed this introduction to a series given this is a “backlist” book as this was originally published in 2016. I will happily forge ahead to see where Calvin and Sebastian sleuth next.
