What happens when the man you kidnapped is the wrong guy, but he hangs around anyway trying to teach you how to be a better kidnapper? Ansel has his hands full with Cade, who is a dangerous man with everyone except Ansel.
From the blurb:
In my defense, this is all Brad’s fault.
I had one very important job: kidnap Brad.
I’ve never kidnapped someone before but how hard could it be? Find Brad. Snatch Brad. Deliver Brad to the very scary people who hold my fate in their hands.
So when a handsome, flirty stranger at the bar drops his name, I think my luck has finally turned. No chase. No fight. The man practically throws himself in my trunk, smiling like it’s a treat to be taken, like he wants me to have him.
The only problem? “Brad,” the charming and slightly unhinged man I’ve been keeping hostage for days, may be the most dangerous man of all.
Now I’m knee-deep in a life of crime I never signed up for. Tangled up with a man I never meant to take—and definitely never meant to fall for. And I’m staring down the barrel of a gun for mistakes I never should’ve made.
Because everyone knows The Firm never forgives a debt… and they always collect in blood.
SNik's review:
Second in series (The Firm), best if read in order. Only one bed. Found family. Dual POV. Heed content warnings.
It’s his first kidnapping, so hacker Ansel can’t be blamed for bad knots, attraction to his victim, and worst of all kidnapping the wrong guy. Cade goes along with his abduction way too merrily as he finds Ansel too intriguing to try and get away.
It’s all about the characters in this story, Ansel and Cade are just hilarious, steamy and sweet even once the bumbled kidnapping is over, the obsession from Cade’s side and the easy acceptance of everything Cade is from Ansel. The found family aspect was especially strong and lovely, supportive and funny secondary characters gave more depth to the series as we root for the Buckingham family. Not as dark as I selected but I thoroughly enjoyed this, Ansel’s sacrifice, Cade’s absolute commitment, everything between them was swoon worthy. Truly can’t wait for more from this series and author duo.
Angel's review:
Cade is one of my favorite brother's now after reading his book, he's a bit unhinged but when he's interested in something he does what he can to learn everything about what he's focused on.. Usually that's different topics or subjects.. Now though he's fixated on his 'kidnapper', someone who has now become his butterfly.
I'm so excited that this series is back and that we now have the second book, I really like the complexity of this series and even though it does have darker themes/elements, it also prioritizes found family. Not just blood relatives, but the family you choose, just like how The Buckingham's have.
Ansel and Cade's journey isn't an easy one, their story starts off quite bizarrely, with Ansel 'kidnapping' Cade. Once you read this yourself you'll understand why I put the quotations around kidnapping. It's more like Cade volunteered to be taken.
The people who had their sights set on Ansel turn them onto Cade and his family, wanting information on The Firm that Ansel has access to. I'm not going to spoil anything but Lark and Cora wrote that whole chunk of the book SO well! They gave us info while simultaneously keeping us in the dark, not knowing what Ansel was going to do, or who was going to get hurt. I loved how they executed that!
I also really appreciated getting to see familiar characters again, the brother's dynamic is an interesting one but it's enjoyable to read about! We also got introduced to Neo, Ansel's best friend, who is quickly becoming a thorn in Wylder's side. Which honestly, I think Neo is exactly what Wylder needs in his life, I'm SO excited for their story.
My only critique with this book is that I wish there were less steamy scenes, but that's a personal preference that I know a lot of people will disagree with. Other than that though I enjoyed reading about Cade and Ansel.
While technically you could read this as a standalone, I recommend reading this series in order. If you don't you'll miss some relevant information.
