Unmade (Hillcroft Group Book 2) by Cara Dee

Mentor/mentee for a military contractor, with action and a bit of angst. This book the second book of the series, but can be read as a standalone.

From the Unmade blurb:

The Hillcroft Group #2 • MM • Age Gap • Action • Military Romance • Hurt/Comfort • Healing/Loss

Part of becoming a private military contractor was learning how to profile people.

Me: Leighton Watts. Lonely as hell. A coward. An orphan. Twenty-four years old. Desperate to belong somewhere. Felt dead most of the time. Too much of a chicken to reach out to the family I never knew. Never asked for anything, because I was afraid to get rejected. In general, just a sorry sack of sadness.

Him: Bo Beckett. Senior operator at the Hillcroft Group. Mentor of sixteen Hillcroft recruits, me included. Rough around the edges but patient and kind. Had sworn off relationships. Straight? Most likely. Early forties. Smoking hot. Angry. On a mission to hunt down his brother’s killer. Definitely pushy. He wanted me to get in touch with my dad’s family, and even more so when we discovered I had uncles who’d worked at Hillcroft. Sidenote: this freaked me out.

Another part of becoming a private military contractor was to focus on the training and not get caught up in an active operation—but in my defense, it wasn’t my fault someone tried to freaking kill me.

This is book 2 of the Hillcroft Group series, and it ties together with book 3. You do not, however, need to read the first book, The Story of Danny Rose, to get the full enjoyment of Unmade. Book 2 and 3, Unmade and Remade, follow the same couple, Leighton and Bo.

Autumn's review:

This book was everything and more. Although, with it only having 1 sex scene, which is rare for Cara, it was amazing! I am NOT a fan of that ending, but knowing that the next part of this book comes out soon is worth the wait.

Military type of reads aren't my normal thing, but I never want to pass up a Cara book. She always brings a story to life in the best of ways. This book had the perfect amount of angst (okay, it could be more but I love angst), humor, and flirts.

Lesetiger's review:

"I have already read a few books by Cara Dee and was therefore very excited about Unmade. What can I say? I really enjoyed Unmade! The author has a wonderful writing style and it didn't take long before I was in the middle of the story.

This time it's about Leighton, who feels lost after the death of his mother and therefore tries to find his father's relatives. And so he ends up at Hillcroft to meet Bo Beckett, whose name he found on a note.
In Unmade, the author gives an insight into training at Hillcroft, as Leigthon applies there after his time in the military. I've been waiting to find out more about Hillcroft for a long time.

I also loved how realistically the protagonists were created. I could directly feel Leighton's raw emotions and his inner turmoil and I liked him from the start. He struggles with grief and anger. We also learn a lot about Bo Beckett and he's not a fan of relationships, but he's a hot operator.

If you're looking for romance, this is a slow burn romance, but it fits the story very well. There is a constant underlying tension and the chemistry between Leighton and Bo is explosive.

But there is also plenty of action and suspense, which is why I was thoroughly entertained.

The ending leaves me feeling a little desperate. Leighton's world may or may not be turned upside down - either way, I was super excited to see what happens next. And then the story ends with a nasty cliffhanger. Now it's time to wait for the next volume and I'm really looking forward to hopefully reading the next one soon!"
