Cut & Run by Abigail Roux

Although this is an audio review of Cut & Run, this book series was recently re-released in paperback and e-book.

After this first volume, I'm hooked on the series and am about to listen to the second volume.

From the blurb:

When by-the-book meets off-the-record, the story’s just starting . . .

Special Agent Ty Grady is pretty sure he’s about to get fired. His last perp skipped town before he could make an arrest, leaving him with a lot of means and precious few ends. When he’s called into the boss’s office, he expects the worst. And he isn’t exactly wrong.

Chained to a desk in cybercrimes, Special Agent Zane Garrett dots his i’s and crosses his t’s. He doesn’t have much of a choice in the matter—his record can’t handle another black mark. When he learns he’s getting reassigned, he doesn’t miss the ironic pronunciation on “promotion.” Wherever he’s going, it’s nowhere good.

When they’re partnered to solve a series of murders, their chances of success look low. They’re fantastic agents, but the case seems more like a punishment than an assignment. They can’t stop driving each other crazy. . . and not just in a bad way. This killer already took out the previous agents assigned to the case, and it’s not long before he’s on Ty and Zane’s trail, as well. They’ll have to set their frustrations aside, before it’s too late.

*This is a limited re-release of the original series, without changes. Some aspects of the story are now dated, and an updated version will be published at a later date.*

Lesetiger's review:

Sometimes I buy audiobooks and then there's so much going on that I don't get around to listening to them straight away and then they lie dormant in my library. That's what happened to me with this series. The other day I happened to come across the series again and so I decided to listen to the first volume. If I had known how quickly this series would captivate me, I would have listened to it much sooner. Ty and Zane are pretty hot!

The story is told from an omnipotent POV and jumps into the minds of different characters. It took me a little while to get used to it.

Ty Grady and Zane Garrett are FBI agents and the first meeting between the two doesn't go ideally. Zane likes to be correct, whereas Ty likes to skirt the rules. Their first case together takes them to New York. A serial killer is up to mischief there and the two quickly become the focus of the killer's attention. I really enjoyed the mix of great and deep characters, a murder mystery and witty dialog. As soon as I started listening, it was difficult to pause the audiobook.

I love Zane and Ty, they are as I mentioned before, main characters with more to them than first meets the eye.

Both have traumas from their past and both are fighters and pretty good at their jobs. But emotions are much more complicated than words and actions, which is why Ty in particular doesn't think much of pouring his heart out to anyone. Zane, on the other hand, at least tries and usually only receives ridicule from Ty.

The criminal case is exciting, even if it is easy to see through. But that doesn't detract from the listening pleasure, because the dynamic between Ty and Zane is very captivating. You won't find any romantic scenes here, but that doesn't suit the two of them.

I am now hooked on the series and am listening to volume two straight away.

The narrator Sawyer Allerde does a good job. He usually reads in a neutral voice, but I was able to distinguish the characters well. He reads the female characters in a slightly higher voice, but it's not cheesy. I liked his interpretation of Ty and Zane.
