Thicker Than Blood by Mia Monroe

Thicker Than Blood is a standalone vampire human story. Geordi and Elias start working together to avoid a lot more bloodshed. Thicker than Blood is a slight deviation from Mia's usual sugary sweet romance, but the touch of darkness makes it that much more enjoyable!

From the blurb:

Rules exist for a reason, but when I meet the vampire of my dreams, all I want to do is break them.

Geordi

Five years ago, humans found out in the most violent way possible that vampires do in fact exist. After the uprising, the two sides settled on three rules to keep both groups safe — vampires can’t use compulsion, humans can’t hunt them, and absolutely no romance between the two groups. I lost a lot, but I found my purpose— researching what makes vampires different from mortals to help us coexist peacefully.

I like following rules and things were fine until I went rogue, testing a vaccine to create an impenetrable shield against compulsion. I needed a vampire to work with me, so I chose Elias Caswell, the powerful and only slightly terrifying centuries-old vampire who’s played a starring role in my fantasy life for ages.

Elias is a hedonist, and as he introduces me to his world, he quickly unravels my carefully constructed plans. When the vaccine is stolen and the city descends into chaos, my life is in danger, and I’m forced to face a traumatic secret of my own.

I need to find an antidote, restore the peace, and with Elias convinced I’m his consort, try to resist a bond that’s thicker than blood. Should be easy.

Right, and Vlad the Impaler just wanted to cuddle.

Thicker Than Blood is standalone MM Paranormal Romance.

Molly Otto's review:

A different take from Mia's usual vampire tales where there is more intrigue on what is happening. Vampires and humans are known but have a divide amongst the ranks. Geordi is a human who does vampyric research in finding ways to block humans from being under compulsion. Elias is the oldest living known vampire in the city. Together, they are paired up in stopping others from destroying the fragile bond between the species. The two are drawn together even though they know they shouldn't. The story keeps you on the edge from start to finish with fun twists and turns along the way. It's a great standalone read from Mia.

Rogue's review:

- standalone
- paranormal
- vampires

This is a standalone vampire story just in time for spooky season. This was a different take on vampires from what I've seen from Mia before, this is a world where vampires have been forced into the public eye and their rights almost curtailed completely. Geordi is a vampire researcher with sympathies towards the vampires' plight, which is unusual for most of the humans in this world. The action starts when a rogue group of vampires decide to take matters into their own hands by starting a massacre.

Elias is one of the oldest vampires in the world and de facto leader. I did struggle a little to like Elias, but I think that was the point - he's unapologetic about being a vampire and indulges all his wants and needs with no shame, and that's admirable. Geordi I liked for the most part, once we got to know him better and the chemistry between the two is off the charts.

This is relatively short, quite bloody and perfect for a Halloween story.

Jacqueleen the Reading Queen's review:

"I've got you exactly where I want you, curious mortal. I hope you like it here. Because it's your home now. I'm never letting you leave."

Thicker Than Blood was a bit different from Mia's usual brand of sweetness, even compared to her other vampire series'. I liked it. The romance read like one long seduction. At first I didn't trust Geordi's intentions with sweet Elias, but I needn't have worried. Yes he wanted to ravage his human, but he also showed feelings as well. And that isn't something a vampire as old as Georgi has had the pleasure of in many long years.

Geordi was the fly caught in Elias' web, but instead of being terrified he was happy to be caught. It took some convincing from the vampire. After all, Geordi is a rule follower and human/vampire relations are technically illegal. He knows there must be a reason for that, but Elias makes him not truly care enough to figure it out before it's too late.

I enjoyed both characters and a few of the side characters stood out as well. I'm looking at you Geordi's bestie! I don't know if this is a standalone, but I wouldn't be opposed to reading more in this universe/style. In fact, I'd likely be excited for more!

Heather's Review:

I hate when authors announce that they've written a standalone story... because I have to resist falling in love with the side characters who deserve love... in this case Geordi's bestie and Elias' trusted servant (whose backstory I need more of) ... but on to the main characters and the storyline... both of which I loved...

This book was a little edgier and more focused on solving the mystery - probably because it needed to be wrapped up in one book vs. the series... but, that being said, I still found the actual romance to move at a great pace and it was fun watching the vampire have to step back and take a breath...

The story was fast paced, the knotting was hot and the love story was sweet and eternal...
