Angel's review:

“Every time I look at him, it feels like the world tilts just a little, like it’s rearranging itself around him."

Pepper Oakley is another penname for L. Eveland, so I knew going into this that the writing was going to have tons of depth and that the scenery, along with the characters were going to be described immaculately. What I was wondering about was how they could put their own spin on a magical school along with a student/professor romance, it's been done before so how could their story stand out? Well let me tell you, their book is above and beyond! It's such a refreshing take on magic and of the paranormal.

I don't think I've read a book that's had a main protagonist who's a necromancer with such vivid detail and a complex history. I loved how Pepper created their own world, their own rules, their own concept of the world of magic and mystery. They just completely blew me away, they knocked it out of the park with this one.

Dorian's easy acceptance of Ren and how he's always so supportive and encouraging was extremely sweet. I wish there was more people like him in the world, we need more people like this y'all! He's truly such a sweetheart, and he tries SO hard to do what he can to protect the ones he cares for.

Ren is extraordinary! I liked being able to go on his journey of self discovery and self acceptance with him and Dorian. I enjoyed being able to see him grow and shine despite all the hardships he's faced. Ren and Dorian together make a wonderful pair! Their magic is compatible together, yes, but they themselves are pulled together by an unseen force that neither men want to fight. I also really appreciated how they took their relationship slow and let it build overtime.

I'm going to be honest, this is the type of story we need right now. A story full of acceptance, love, warmth, and support. One where it's okay to be different, in fact it's encouraged. In the back of the book Pepper said that their hope with this story was to help inspire people and to show those who have felt unaccepted and unappreciated that they have a place in this world. And speaking from personal experience here, I believe they've achieved that.

I was so sad when I finished this story because I didn't want it to end. I was enjoying it way too much. Hopefully there'll be another book in this world because I'd love to come back and revisit Blackstone Academy. I will say that as far as side characters go, I absolutely LOVED Luca, Grim, and Bones. They just brought the whole story together!
